Why do woman crave chocolate?

I am not sure this question fits into my blog but I am just doing it for all those poor males out there !! ..LOL
My wife recently asked me why woman crave chocolate. This of course (as all good males know and understand) is when they are in a certain part of their menstrual cycle. There are several theories out there so I will attempt to give it my best shot. Initially some bodies of thought were that it was simply related to low sugar levels. Particularly dark chocolate has a low “GI” so it does stabilise blood sugar levels fairly well. Of course with low blood sugar levels you will feel irritable, have mood swings and feel quite fatigued. However men get this as well so when woman actually carve chocolate at certain times of the month we had to look elsewhere for a better explanation. What is a more acceptable explanation is a drop that occurs in the serotonin levels in woman a week or so out from their menstrual cycle. Eating chocolate with its ingredients actually increases the levels of serotonin. This will lessen the symptoms (such as anxiety, depression, irritability low self esteem etc) in females quite successfully. Chocolate also contains caffeine, fat, sugar and also some trace minerals including magnesium. Magnesium can be deficient in woman prior and during the menstrual cycle. In some woman a good magnesium supplement can assist them. (Source of following extract: http://kerryg.hubpages.com/hub/Magnesium-for-Menstrual-Health)
“Studies have shown significant reductions in a number of common menstrual complaints in women who increased dietary magnesium consumption or were given magnesium supplements. Low levels of magnesium are also common in women who experience menstrual problems.
One of magnesium’s many roles is as a muscle relaxant. This is especially important for women who suffer from menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) because cramps are caused by excessively strong contractions of the uterus. Magnesium helps the powerful uterine muscles relax, reducing cramping.
Magnesium’s muscle-relaxing powers also help relieve the PMS or menstrual headaches many women experience”
So guys always have on hand a box of chocolates for the wife/girlfriend (or both), I can assure you they will love it more than the magnesium complex you try to give them. Of course be warned they will be calmer and appreciative in the first instance, however, you may get abused when they say “why did you make me eat those?…” now I am going to be fat”…Am I fat?”… “Do you love me” and for the slow male learners out there the answer is always …” No way you’re the most beautiful woman in the world”…. ..Good Luck with menopause…..
