A2 Milk ….what is all the fuss?

You may have heard about it, you may have seen it on your supermarket shelves. A2 Milk is in fact a trade mark and the producers claim it is a pure dairy milk, completely natural, permeate and additive free. Most dairy milk today contain 2 main types of beta-casein protein, A2 and A1, while originally all dairy cows produced milk containing only the A2 type of beta-casein protein. A2 Milk comes from cows specially selected to produce A2 beta-casein protein rather than A1. Because A2 Milk is rich in A2 beta-casein protein, it makes the claim that it may assist with your digestive well-being. The theory is that that at some point in history a genetic mutation occurred and that the A1 started to appear in cattle. The manufacture says it test cows for the A2 beta-casein and only use these cows in their production of A2 milk. Again making the claim that it will assist with better digestion. It should be noted if you are lactose intolerant (a real one) that this product still contains lactose and will not resolve any digestive problems for this group. Personally I have no idea whether these claims are real or not. I suggest you contact your dietician to canvas their opinion. While the statements they make about the cows are no doubt true I have seen little literature about any real health benefits to date. For those who are not lactose intolerant but have digestive issues when they drink a glass of milk it just may well be worth it. Good luck.

Hi, if you are wanting more information regarding a2 Milk, I would suggest the website http://www.betacasein.org which has a lot of links to scientific literature describing the research into BCM7 which is a peptide sequence that is at the heart of the a2 Milk story. Enjoy!
